It's time for Josie Bates and Katie Bates to learn how to drive! You would think that after teaching nine children to operate a motor vehicle Gil and Kelly Bates would be professional driver's ed instructors, but as you'll see in this week's episode, it's still a chaotic ordeal.

In the extended scene below, Josie and Katie join Kelly, Lawson, and Carlin in the 15-passenger van to learn the basics.

Seeking a bit of relaxation before school starts up again, a handful of the Bates sisters took a girls trip to Florida. Sister-in-law and mother of two Whitney Bates also joined in on the fun. Erin Paine, Michael Keilen, and Alyssa Webster were unable to make it.

Do you recognize the vacation spot? It's Cinnamon Beach in Palm Coast, Florida.

"The reason Carson didn't eat his cupcake is Chad's fault because Chad don't like him to have sweets or anything that's bad for him, so...he likes yogurt, Greek yogurt, that Chad feeds him."

-Erin (Bates) Paine

When the Bates family gathers around Carson's high chair in the video below, they expect the one-year-old to happily smash his cupcake all over his face. Carson's reaction is priceless; he has no interest in eating the decadent treat, but cousin Bradley Bates sure does! Tune into this week's episode of Bringing Up Bates for more footage from Carson Paine's first birthday party.

The Bates sure know how to have a good time! To ensure that everyone has fun at Carson Paine's first birthday party, Kelly Bates buys a package of "Bump N' Bounce Body Bumpers," as well as a set of "Mega Boxing Gloves," both made by Banzai.

The entire family has a blast watching the younger kids run into each other and topple over onto the ground. Then Papa Bates and the older guys decide to give the new toys a try, and they completely dominate the field (video below).

Be sure to tune into UP tomorrow evening at 9pm ET/8pm CT for a brand new episode of Bringing Up Bates.

Bringing Up Bates "Growing Paine"
  • Kelly, Lawson, and Carlin take Josie and Katie on a secluded road to practice driving. The two girls recently received their driver’s permits and are eager to get behind the wheel. When Gil expresses a little bit of concern, Josie replies: “Dad, I’m like the bomb driver. All they gotta tell me is the gas and brake and I’ve got it.”
  • Katie is more confident behind the wheel, but her passengers let out quite a few screams as she drifts into the wrong lane a few times. Josie is much more cautious and takes it slower. Katie and Josie agree that driving is more difficult than it looks. But then again, they are learning on a 15-passenger van...
  • Meanwhile, Erin and Chad prepare to host Carson’s first birthday party. Michaella arrives from Chicago to help. Chad’s mom, Tammy, and two of his siblings, Tabitha and Johnny, also come into town for the event.
  • Erin and Chad say they are enjoying parenthood: “It really blows my mind that time has gone by so quick, but it’s been so sweet and special," shares Chad. "It’s just a thrill.”
  • “These first birthdays are great,” says Gil. “But the problem is…they’re going to get really expensive.” He and Kelly joke that they might have to stop giving birthday presents to their married children so they can afford gifts for the grandbabies.
  • After lunch, guests enjoys watching various family members run around the yard wearing Bump N’ Bounce Body Bumpers. (The song playing in the background is "Tomorrow" by Dewey Lybecker, Daniel Read, and Chris Soother.)
  • Next is the three-legged and four-legged race. After the activities, everyone gathers around Carson’s highchair to watch him eat his cupcake. (See Tuesday's post for a hilarious deleted scene.)
  • “It was a fun birthday party,” shares Gil. “I don’t know that Carson’s going to remember it, but it will be one that we never forget.”

Throwback: Bates sing "The Love of God"

We're a day late with our #ThrowbackThursday post, but better late than never, right? This week's #TBT is a video of the Bates family singing the hymn "The Love of God" back in 2011, when Gil and Kelly had "only" 18 children.

On a side note, the 2013 movie Indescribable tells the story of "The Love of God."

"The Love of God"
Frederick M. Lehman

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Refrain

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Refrain

Random Bates Facts

Happy Sunday! For your enjoyment, we have a few random Bates facts to share with you this afternoon...
  • The Bates just started their homeschooling year, so their lives have suddenly become much busier. They primarily use A Beka Book, which, according to Kelly Bates, stays close to the public school schedule and produces high standardized test scores.
  • Trace Bates hopes to audition to be a trick rider at the Dixie Stampede very soon. How exciting is that?
  • Three-week-old Brooklyn Paine is doing very well, as are the rest of the Paines. Erin still teaches piano lessons out of her home, and Katie usually comes over to babysit Carson and Brooklyn. Erin and Chad are in the process of starting a furniture business, which they will call Cherin's.

Meant to share this video with you early this morning, but time got away from us...

This week on Bringing Up Bates, Gil and Kelly Bates take the kids to Austin's Steak and Homestyle Buffet for an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. Everyone enjoys the experience, but the only problem is that Kelly is unable to look over each child's shoulder as they choose their food.

"When my mom says, 'Make sure everybody gets some greens'...the kids interpret that very loosely," says Nathan Bates.

"Three or four came back with all green gummy bears on their ice cream," adds Gil Bates.

Bringing Up Bates"Bates Dish It Out," airs Thursday at 9pm ET/8pm CT on UP.

Bringing Up Bates"Bates Dish It Out"

  • Zach and Chad work together to make a little bed for Bradley. “…The man has never-ending talents,” says Tori of Chad. “He’s amazing.”
  • Lawson joins his producer, Andy Leftwich, at Sound Stage Studios in Nashville to continue work on his upcoming album. “I’m always nervous going into the studio,” admits Lawson. “There’s so much going into it. You want to make sure you’re getting what you want out of it.”
  • “I think Lawson is seeing his music career really starting to grow,” shares Kelly. “Yes it requires talent…but I think a large majority of it is knowing the right people, being at the right place at the right time.” Stay tuned for details on Lawson's fall tour.
  • Emily Ann Roberts, who recently scored second place on The Voice, joins Lawson in the recording studio. The two vocalists give viewers a sneak peek of one of the duets they are performing together. Surprisingly, it's a heartbreak song.
    • Trace: “Why do you do a breakup song when you should be doing a love song or something?”
    • Lawson: “Hey, you sing about what’s real to you.”
    • Nathan: “All that he’s ever known is breakups, so that’s what’s real to him.”
  • “I feel really, really blessed to be a part of this,” shares Emily Ann. “I’m really thankful that Lawson invited me to be on his record. I think it’s going to be incredible.”
  • According to Callie, “Emily Ann has a voice like an angel.”
  • Back in East Tennessee, everyone heads out the door to eat lunch at Austin’s Steak and Homestyle Buffet, an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. Gil and Kelly say it has been a while since their family has been to a buffet.
  • “The kids going to a buffet is like turning a child loose in a candy store,” explains Gil. “A moment on the lips, forever on the hips."
  • Most of the family members eat way too much, but not Tori. “You know what Tori did?” says Carlin. “Tori felt great afterwards ‘cause she walks in the buffet and what does she get at a buffet? A SALAD! So then, she started eating her big salad, so then I felt bad, so I had to get me a salad. So I ate that plus everything else, and so then I really felt bad.”
The song playing in the background towards the end of the episode is "Bring A Little Joy," performed by Jasmine Ash.

The Paines' Ever-Changing Living Room

Most of you have heard about Chad Paine's passion for restoring old furniture and making new furniture. (He and Erin hope to turn that hobby into a business very soon.) Did you know that the father of two also enjoys redecorating?

The Paines' tiny, cottage-style house has undergone quite a few renovations since the couple tied the knot in November 2013.

This photo of their living room was taken earlier this summer...

But just last year, the same room had two other "looks." This is the "pre-Carson" living room...

And this is the "post-Carson" living room...

Do you enjoy redecorating?

Flashback: Allie Webster's 1st Birthday

$
0
0

Well we can't call this a throwback because it's not Thursday, but how about a flashback?

The Bringing Up Bates episode featuring Allie Jane Webster's 1st birthday aired in late July, but we never posted snapshots from the gathering. This special one-year-old had more than 40 guests at her party! Most were family from either the Bates side or Webster side, but Bobby Smith and his parents, as well as the Bates' friend Courtney, also attended.

The crafty and creative Alyssa Webster went all out for her daughter's milestone birthday, but she joked that her family probably didn't appreciate the elegance of it all.

The Websters' tiny house was quickly overrun when the Bates arrived to help set up, and it was all Alyssa could do to keep her cool while her siblings ate more snacks than they made.

Before the party started, everyone headed to the local park to expend their energy and avoid dirtying the clean house before the other guests arrived.

And here's Miss Allie Jane with her cake!
