Carlin Bates receives a care package from Evan

As promised in our last post, we have some neat info to share about Evan Stewart, Carlin Bates' boyfriend. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and is the second youngest of six children (four girls and two boys). Since he was young, Evan and his parents and siblings have traveled as a family gospel band called His Own. Here is a video of the siblings performing a song:

"We always have a waiting list."
-Kelly Bates

How do Gil and Kelly Bates afford braces for their super-sized family? As you'll hear in the video below, it's not easy. So far, eight of the Bates children have had them. To avoid becoming bogged down by orthodontist bills, the parents only allow a few to be in braces at a time. Have you or your kids had orthodontic work?

This week on Bringing Up Bates, both Carlin Bates and Josie Bates have their wisdom teeth extracted. Let's just say that the anesthesia has a very entertaining effect on Carlin. This video is sure to make you laugh (and maybe feel a little sorry for Carlin, too). As you'll see tomorrow on the show, Josie's reaction to the medication is very different.

Season five of Bringing Up Bates is still underway, and UP just announced that the show has been renewed for a sixth season, slated to premiere on June 1st at 9pm ET/8pm CT. The network has ordered 13 all-new episodes. Who's excited??

Check out the press release:

The new season begins with a wedding to kick off UP’s “Summer of Love”

“With 19 kids (plus spouses!) and six grandkids, each day brings new opportunities and challenges chock-full of life’s emotional and humorous moments,” said Timothy Kuryak, senior vice president, unscripted development and production, UP. “This summer will be no different as the ever-growing family continues to pursue new activities, dreams, and relationships. Everything is multiplied in the Bates household!”

In the new season of Bringing Up Bates, it’s a summer of love for the family. From Carlin’s blooming relationship (will it become a courtship?) to Tori’s deepening bond with Bobby (will it end in a proposal?) to someone getting married in the premiere (who will it be?), love is blooming for the Bates. And lately, their simple rural lifestyle in Tennessee is in a flurry of transitions, as this remarkable and ever-expanding family continues to navigate life’s trials and triumphs.

Erin and Chad Paine get pygmy goats, Jeb and Judson take Martial Arts classes, and Jackson earns his learner’s permit. Meanwhile, Bobby graduates from college and contemplates moving from Florida to Tennessee to be closer to Tori, and Nathan pursues his dream to be a pilot instructor.

Led by devoted father Gil and his loving wife Kelly Jo, the Bates do everything in bulk while staying true to their values and rules for the family.

Bringing Up Bates"Working Up An Appetite"

  • On a previous episode, the Bates men poured concrete for their basketball court, but they haven’t yet put up the basketball goal. Lawson hollers out instructions as everyone attempts to put the goal together. The project takes them two days to complete.
  • “The good thing is about Lawson’s leadership,” Zach states. “He never really messes that much up because even though he’s telling everybody all the wrong things to do, nobody pays him any attention.”
  • On another day, Gil and Kelly take Carlin and Josie to have their wisdom teeth extracted. Carlin’s reaction to the anesthesia is very entertaining. “[Carlin] was like Miss Invincible,” says Gil.
  • “My head was so mis-combobulated up there,” says Carlin. “I couldn’t think straight.” Carlin is very much “out of it” and won’t stop talking, so Gil firmly tells her to settle down. She breaks down crying.
  • Josie, on the other hand, is very tired and in a lot of pain. “Josie, if you said anything to her, she would just bust out crying, and Carlin, if you didn’t want to have a party with her, she would bust out crying,” says Katie. “But they both did amazing.”
  • At the end of the episode, Kelly, Lawson, Trace, Tori, and Carlin head over to Cracker Barrel to pick up dinner for the entire family. The Paines and little Bates family also come over. “Enjoy this roast while you can because mine don’t taste this good,” Kelly jokingly tells the family.
  • Gil and Kelly are headed to Australia and have plans to divide up the little kids among the older married ones while they are gone.
  • “I think it’s really a special time any time the family gets together and just sits at the table and has dinner together,” says Erin.

Seventeen-year-old Josie Bates is in cosmetology school and plans to work in a salon after she graduates and earns her license. Although some of her sisters were hesitant to let her touch their hair at first, it didn't take long before she earned their trust.

In this sneak peak of Thursday's new episode, Tori and Josie play a little joke on Carlin.

A rumor has been floating around the internet that Lawson Bates, who turns 25 in July, is in a courtship with Jana Duggar, 27. (The Duggars were in East Tennessee visiting the Bates last week.) Gil and Kelly Bates put the rumor to rest:

"I think that probably Lawson and Jana would both be shocked by that news, although we have heard that rumor," said Kelly. "They are very good friends but no courtships that either of our families are aware of."

'The 'Cubs' Land in Chicago' Recap

Bringing Up Bates"The 'Cubs' Land in Chicago"

  • It’s January, and the five youngest Bates boys are staying with Michael and Brandon in Chicago while Gil, Kelly, and Carlin are in Australia and New Zealand for speaking engagements. “Mom said she was leaving the country, and I said, ‘Can I have all the little kids?’” shares Michael. “And she said I could have half of them.”
  • It takes the boys a few days to adjust to the Keilens’ house rules. They aren’t used to going to bed at 9:30 and waking up at 7:30, nor are they used to healthier food choices.
  • Jackson’s reaction to Michael and Brandon’s breakfast crepes is priceless: “Michaela fed us pancake looking things, like a taco pancake with fruit in it.”
  • Michael bakes gingerbread and leads the boys in a gingerbread house decorating contest. She makes a rule that they can’t eat any candy while they are working, which is a difficult concept for her brothers to grasp. “At our house, when you’re making the gingerbread house, you can eat the candy as you’re making it,” says Jackson. “Here…if you eat the candy, you lose the privilege of eating the gingerbread house.”
  • Michael and Brandon also tell the boys the medieval story that they wrote and are in the process of turning into a picture book. Later, they take the boys to Medieval Times, a medieval-themed dinner theater that features a jousting performance.
  • Although her brothers have tested her patience, Michael has had a blast and says she will cry when they leave. “They’ve been so fun, but it’s like having a full-fledged family, suddenly,” says Brandon. “They’ve been a lot of fun, but I’m not going to lie, I’m going to have a sigh of relief.”
  • Back in Tennessee, Josie takes the film crew to her cosmetology school. “…It’s a very practical thing,” she says. “I could use it after I got married and do it from my home.”
  • “…Being homeschooled and then going to college is a world of difference,” says Josie. “The social aspect is very different…and I guess being by myself was very different…” Courtney Green, a family-friend of the Bates, is also in cosmetology school with Josie.
  • Later, Josie styles Carlin’s hair at home. Tori comes in with a bob cut died black and freaks Carlin out. It turns out to be a wig.

Did you catch last night's episode? (Click here to read our recap.) What you won't see on the show is footage of the trip to Australia and New Zealand that Gil, Kelly, and Carlin take while the younger boys spend time in Chicago with Michaela and Brandon.

The video below contains some of the highlights of the Bates' time Down Under. Those who are from Australia or New Zealand, we are curious if Gil's accent attempt is anywhere near what the folks down there really sound like.

This week's episode is the Bringing Up Bates season five finale! But don't worry, UP has several specials scheduled as you wait for the season six premiere.

The Bates have a lot in store for viewers on Thursday's hour-long episode. As Lexi Mae Webster's birth approaches, Alyssa Webster is told that the baby's heartbeat is skipping (seen in the video below). Will these complications impact the delivery? Following Lexi's arrival, the Websters join the entire Bates clan in East Tennessee for a "down on the farm" themed I Love You Day celebration.

 Alyssa, John, and Allie Webster

Every year, the Bates family celebrates four double birthdays. Today, Carlin Bates is turning 19, and Allie Webster is turning two.

Currently attending Crown College, Carlin enjoys cooking, singing, playing piano and violin, and working with the children at the Bates' church. She is very animated (as viewers have noticed), and her family says she is full of initiative. Her favorite foods are Mexican and Japanese, and she is currently in the "get-to-know-you" stage with boyfriend Evan Stewart (no official courtship yet).

Allie Jane was an easy baby but has turned into a busy, talkative toddler. She loves her little sister, Lexi Mae Webster!

Growing up, Erin Bates Paine often wondered how her parents handled all the work that comes with raising a super-sized family, but looking back, she says it has certainly been worth all the energy her mom and dad have invested.

"I hope that [Chad and I] can bless others the way my parents have really been an encouragement to people they meet," Erin shares in an UP interview, shown in the video clip below.
