'Bates Sports Special' Recap

Bringing Up Bates"Bates Sports Special"

Look back at the Bates’ Most Memorable “Sports Spectacular” Moments...

“I don’t think any Bates would ever make it to the Olympics,” says Tori. But did you know that one Bates made it to the qualifying rounds? Gil was a high school state champion wrestler and qualified to try out for the Olympics.

Basketball
Trace is practicing for Crown College basketball tryouts with his friends, and Lawson joins in for a game. Trace and Lawson get along great, unless they’re playing sports. “When it comes to sports, the problem is, he wants to be the star, and I just want the ball any time,” says Trace.

Golf
The older guys take the little boys on a golfing outing. “Lawson and Nathan and Trace taking Jackson, Warden and Isaiah out to teach them golf makes me think of the blind leading the blind,” says Zach.

Mock Police Academy Training
The guys join Zach for a mock session of training at the police academy. “The main goal is to irritate you and make you mad and push you to the limit to see what you do under pressure,” says Lawson.

Downhill Skiing
Nathan arrives late, so Kelly shows him what she learned. “Nate, I’m going to be teaching you, but that doesn’t mean I know how to ski good, it just means that I remember facts good,” says Kelly. After a few minutes, Nathan says he’s ready to hit the slopes. According to Gil and Kelly, Nathan would have no problem going down a black diamond without a single lesson.

Ice Skating
Four days before he marries Michael, Brandon goes ice skating with his future brothers-in-law. The other guys enjoy horsing around, while Brandon takes it slow but still somehow manages to walk away with a gash in his head.

Wrestling
With the rest of the family watching, Lawson and Nathan each try to beat their dad at wrestling. Gil prevails, although Nathan still thinks he won.

Football
Growing up, Gil was the quarterback of the high school football team and was consumed with sports, but he has higher hopes for his sons. “I think Gil loved sports so much, it was hard for it not to be number one,” says Mama Jane, Gil’s mom. “He didn’t want his boys to have sports as their number one. He wanted Christ first in their lives.”

Bringing UP Bates

Since the start of season seven, the Bates have officially filmed more than 100 episodes of Bringing Up Bates, which premiered on New Year's Day 2015. (They were also featured in a mini series, called United Bates of America, on TLC in 2012.)

We know some of you are concerned, as last week's episode was a recap of the best Bates sports moments, and tonight's episode will highlight the most viewed Bates clips. But we want to assure you that new episodes will return next Thursday.

This season will be the largest to date. The network has ordered 26 episodes, so the Bates still have plenty of exciting footage in store for viewers!

Tori Bates Smith and Bobby Smith

Tori Bates: "We were like, dead silent, scared to death because we did not know how to bring it up."
Bobby Smith: "It was intensely awkward."

After getting engaged, Tori and Bobby decide to propose (no pun intended) the idea of tying the knot in December, rather than waiting until after Tori's graduation. So they plan a double date with Gil and Kelly, hoping they will be on board. The future Mr. and Mrs. have some pretty good arguments!

Wedding Prep and a Lake Day

This week's new episode of Bringing Up Bates is only one day away. Scroll down for promo photos and a video clip.

Now that Tori Bates and Bobby Smith are engaged, it's time to choose a wedding date. They invite Gil and Kelly Bates out for a meal and nervously ask for their blessing to tie the knot in December, rather than waiting until after Tori's graduation in May 2018.

Later, Kelly pulls out her extensive wedding planning list, and she and Erin Paine explain all the things that need to be done in order to say 'I do.' The newly engaged couple is a bit overwhelmed.

Finding a dress is one of the first items on the agenda. Kelly and Tori drive up to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, to meet with Renee Miller, a dress designer who has made wedding dresses for Jinger Duggar Vuolo, Joy-Anna Duggar Forsyth, and Kendra Caldwell Duggar.

Just finished watching tonight's new episode of Bringing Up Bates. Be sure to come back to the blog when the show ends to read our written recap. ("Save the Date and Decisions to Make" premieres at 9pm ET/8pm CT on UP.)

After nailing down a wedding date, it's time to start planning for the big day. Tori has come up with roles for all her siblings. The older ones will be part of the bridal party, which will include 10 bridesmaids and 10 groomsmen, while the younger ones will have other tasks. Some will be flower girls and ring bearers, while others will be ushers and program attendants.

In the video below, we see Tori's nonchalant method for asking her sisters to stand up with her at the altar.

In celebration of her 12th birthday, Addallee Bates spent a week down in Clermont, Florida, with the Websters. With 18 brothers and sisters, it's not always possible to spend an extended period of time with just one sibling, so Addee had a blast bonding with Alyssa and loving on her babies.

'Save the Date and Decisions to Make' Recap

Bringing Up Bates"Save the Date and Decisions to Make"
  • Tori and Bobby ask Gil and Kelly on a double date to discuss wedding dates. “As we were kind of talking through things, we realized, graduation might be a long time to wait,” says Bobby.
  • The newly engaged couple nervously tells Tori’s parents that they are hoping to tie the knot in December.
  • “I would normally say, ‘No, that’s probably not the best idea,’ but that’s kind of what happened to and my wife,” says Gil. “Once you know this is the person God wants you to marry, I don’t think there’s a reason to torment yourself for another year or six months if you have the ability, the means to go ahead and get married.”
  • Back at home, Kelly, Tori, Bobby, and Erin sit down to start planning for the big day. “When [Kelly] finished making that list, I think they was ready to elope!” says Gil. The Bates are very familiar with all the work that goes into a wedding.
  • “I already got my colors--my favorite two colors--gray and blue,” says Callie, proudly. “Callie, you’re only eight,” responds Addallee. “I know, but I already picked my wedding colors,” says Callie.
  • Kelly suggests going with a wedding dress designer in Kentucky who was recommended by the Bates' friends (ie the Duggars), and Tori agrees. Kelly and Tori head to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, for a consultation with Renee Miller.
  • Tori isn’t quite sure what she wants, so Renee shows her several different styles. She ends up really liking a lacy dress with champagne satin underneath. Tori admits she is indecisive, so she plans to come back with her sisters to try dresses on, hoping they can give her some advice.
  • Nathan is hosting his annual lake party, which started off several years ago with family but has turned into a guys only event. “Girls are not invited to Nathan’s lake party,” says Callie. “I think it is not fair that we don’t get to go.”
  • Nathan, Gil, and a handful of other guys head to a rental house for a mini retreat, filled with water activities and Bible study.

Babymoon at Epcot

To enjoy some time together as couples before the births of their daughters, Erin and Chad Paine met Alyssa and John Webster in Florida for a "babymoon." Gil and Kelly tagged along. The group of six visited Epcot at Walt Disney World, using tickets that were given to them.

Erin, who is due with Everly Hope Paine on April 28th, is almost 33 weeks along. Alyssa is expecting Zoey Joy Webster on April 2nd, which means she is 36 weeks pregnant.

If Erin and Alyssa follow their past delivery patterns, they could give birth around the same time. The Paines welcomed both Carson and Brooklyn more than three weeks early, while the Websters met Allie and Lexi within one day of their due dates.
