Gil's Lobster Impersonation
"...This guy and girl come walking in with a lobster that they just caught. I mean, a live, moving shaking, pinching lobster."
-Gil Bates
Have you ever tried lobster? While in Maine, Gil, Kelly, Carlin, and Evan visit an iconic lobster restaurant called Portland Lobster Co. Gil's lobster impersonation is pretty entertaining, as is Carlin's reaction to the live lobsters. Check out this video preview of Thursday's new episode of Bringing Up Bates.

'The Maine Event' Recap
Bringing Up Bates"The Maine Event"
- Carlin, Evan, Gil, Kelly, and Evan’s parents (Paul and Denese Stewart) arrive in Portland, Maine, for the big proposal weekend. Their first order of business is picking up lobster at Portland Lobster Co. Evan is eager to try a lobster roll, but Carlin orders a cheeseburger. Evan holds a live lobster and convinces Carlin to touch it.
- Carlin and Evan rent bikes and leave their parents behind. “Alright Evan,” says Kelly. “See all these people? That’s going to be your chaperone for now. That’s your chaperone for now until we catch up.” Carlin says they have God as their chaperone.
- The lovebirds take a trail along the water but end up getting lost. “You know what?” jokes Gil. “They may have run off without us. That could be bad.” They finally make it to the picnic spot where the parents are waiting, and they all eat their lunch. Carlin tries a piece of lobster but doesn’t love it.
- After the picnic, Evan asks Carlin if she has a fancy outfit to put on for the activities he has planned for the evening. At this point, Carlin knows that the engagement is just hours away.
- The group goes back to their rental house to change. Kelly, Gil, and Evan’s mom arrive at Portland Head Lighthouse 30 minutes early to set up flowers and a table. Back at the house, a chauffeured limo picks up Carlin and Evan and drops them off at the lighthouse.
- “I don’t think anyone realizes the blind faith I have going into this,” admits Evan. “Even Carlin, I don’t think she realizes it. She thinks everything’s just perfectly under control, and I’m here sweating under my suit coat. I’m looking for my parents, her parents. I’m not even sure where they set up.”
- When the couple makes it to the proposal site, the cellist starts playing. Evan reads a poem that he wrote called “My One:”
- “I could list a million reasons why you’re the one for me and a million reasons more why I love you tenderly. From your hair to your smile to your heart that’s made of gold, I love every part of you with a love that won’t grow old…I need you in my life cause you’re the very air I breathe…I thank my God above that I’m as blessed as a man could be cause out of every guy on earth, He made you just for me. Now as I’m standing here with my love so strong and true, I have a special question I’ve been meaning to ask you. It’s just five simple words, but they’re filled with much romance. So Carlin Brianne Bates, may I have this dance?”
- At that point, Carlin is smiling, laughing, and crying as she says, “I don’t know how to dance!” But they pull it off.
- After their dance, Evan says, “I love you so much. You’re my best friend, you’re my girlfriend, and I hope you’ll be my fiancée.” He gets down on one knee and asks the big question: “So Carlin Brianne Bates, will you marry me?”
- And of course, she says yes! They embrace, and he puts the ring on her finger. After a few moments, they call the parents over for hugs. “There were a lot of tears, a lot of tears on both sides,” says Kelly. The sun is setting, so the lighting is perfect for photos.
- “We love Carlin,” says Denese. “I think she fits perfectly with our family.”
- “We’re not just gaining a daughter,” laughs Paul. “We’re gaining about 40 people.”

Get You a Good Paying Job
"If you love lobster, you better get you a good paying job cause it ain't cheap to eat."
-Gil Bates
In Portland, Maine, Gil tries lobster for what seems to be the first time. But Evan Stewart does not approve of the sauce that his future father-in-law pairs with it (video below). Here's a hint: it's better with fries and hot dogs.

Gil and Kelly's New Bedroom
Last season on Bringing Up Bates, we watched the Bates kids give their living room, kitchen, and dining room a complete overhaul as a surprise for their parents, who were in Utah for Josie's engagement. They barely finished in time, but their hard work paid off. (Click here to see the before and after photos.)
This time, the siblings decided to take their redecorating to the next level (literally...because they went upstairs) and give Gil and Kelly Bates' master bedroom a makeover. Doesn't it look amazing? The masterminds behind the new design were Erin and Chad Paine, Zach and Whitney Bates, and Carlin Bates. For those looking to do some redecorating of their own, here is a list of some of the supplies they used:
Comforter: Purchased at Stein Mart
Family photos on Canvas: Ordered from Easy Canvas Prints
Bed: Ordered from Wayfair
Lamps, pillows greenery, curtains: Purchased at Target and Hobby Lobby
Paint: Sherwin-Williams (dark is peppercorn and light is aesthetic white)
Nightstands, bench, dresser, vanity: Refinished by Chad Paine
We have also included a before and after photo of the change that the room underwent in 2015.

Paine Update
Everly Paine and Chad Paine
Chad continues to work construction and loves it. He is currently remodeling a flip house with help from some of the Bates guys. Erin and Chad still live in their tiny but quaint cottage, but they are hoping to move to a bigger home by the end of this year. They want to either buy land and build or purchase a fixer upper.
Musically gifted Erin Paine plans to record a new CD, which will be solely piano, this month.

Surprising Katie
"Katie's the hardest person to surprise cause she always has the inside track on everybody."
-Gil Bates
It's no secret that Katie Bates hates being the center of attention. If you've been a long-time viewer of Bringing Up Bates, you have probably figured that out. But it's her 18th birthday, and the Bates family is not going to let this one slide by without doing something big. In this sneak peek of Thursday's new episode, they prepare for a surprise party.

Tonight: Bate and Switch
Like clockwork, the Bates have another fun-filled episode in store for fans tonight on UPtv.
Thursday, February 7
8pm: A Sweet Shower & a Surprise Switch
8:30pm: The Maine Event
9pm: Bate and Switch NEW!
It’s a sweet surprise for Katie's 18th Birthday when her family celebrates the occasion with two of her favorite things: pizza and ice cream. This birthday girl is hard to surprise and doesn't enjoy being the center of attention, but she sure looks happy.
And soon-to-be newlyweds Josie Bates and Kelton Balka shop for an apartment they can share together once they're married. Realtor Whitney Bates tags along to give the young couple her expertise and be their chaperone one last time.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Jackson Bates has saved up money from his construction jobs to buy his own used truck, but he quickly realizes that buying a fixer upper is a “big project.”
And later, Josie and her bridesmaids head to Renee's Bridal shop in Kentucky for dress alterations. But when Renee takes scissors to Josie’s bodice, will her dream dress turn into a nightmare?

'Bates and Switch' Recap
Bringing Up Bates "Bates and Switch"
- It’s Katie’s 18th birthday, and the family is determined to throw her a surprise party. Katie dislikes being the center of attention, and she is almost impossible to surprise. So the family gathers together on Isaiah’s birthday, under the pretense of celebrating him. When Kelly announces that it’s time to give Isaiah “birthday praises,” he stands up and Kelly shout’s “Wrong birthday! We’re really celebrating Katie!”
- “I played a pretty crucial part in the surprising of Katie’s birthday,” says Isaiah, happy to have a chance to do something for his sister. He had gone on a birthday shopping trip with Kelly, and the family plans to celebrate him on another day.
- Katie is shocked and can’t understand how she didn’t catch on sooner. When the family gives her birthday praise, she starts tearing up. Among other things, they say she is one of the funniest Bates, thoughtful, never asks for anything for herself, and full of personality.
- Katie has recently started cosmetology school (following in Josie’s footsteps) and is learning to fly with Nathan.
- Later, realtor Whitney goes apartment hunting with Josie and Kelton. The couple is leaning towards a one bedroom that is “pretty,” as Josie puts it. “I think if we have two bedrooms, we might have a little too many people wanting to spend the night,” she says.
- “There’s going to be a huge void in the house, but I think that God’s probably been preparing us…to let go because as the wedding gets closer, Josie’s working more and more hours trying to save more and more money,” says Kelly. “So she’s really been out of the house a lot more.”
- “I think moving out from living in a house that has like 25 people nonstop is definitely going to be a change, especially for me,” says Josie. “But I’m quite excited about it being just quiet and clean, yes clean!”
- The second apartment that they visit is beautiful but expensive, but it’s minutes from Josie’s work.
- Back at the house, Gil and Nathan help Jackson fix his 1993 Ford pickup. “Jackson loves his new truck,” says Callie. “He’s crazy about it.” He has been working with contractor Chad for about a year and has saved up his money. Jackson estimates that he will have about $1,500 in it by the time it’s ready to drive.
- The guys end up discovering another problem that will require some more time to fix. “Yep, this is going to be a project,” says Gil.
- Kelly, Josie, and three of the bridesmaids (Whitney, Carlin, and friend Courtney) drive up to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, to visit wedding dress designer Renee so she can alter the dress that Josie bought in New York City. The other two bridesmaids are Alyssa Webster and Ariana Balka, Kelton’s sister.
- The seam that needs to be let out has no seam allowance, so Renee has to cut some seams so she can give Josie more room to move her arms. “I’m closing my eyes,” says Josie. “I can’t handle it.”
- The bridesmaids try on their dresses, which are floor length and in the same color family but not identical. Katie’s dress is a very different color and makes her look like a potato, as she says. “Do not let your mom order your bridesmaid dress online from China!” says Katie.
- “Katie looks beautiful in anything, even the potato sack, but it’s probably not her 100 percent best look,” says Josie.

Katie is [Finally] an Adult
"I'm officially adulting. I mean, so many things come out of this. I'm adulting because I'm 18 years old."
-Katie Bates
Katie Bates is thrilled to be 18 years old. While some people say they don't feel any different when they enter adulthood, Katie thinks it's just about the best thing ever (video below). She is currently pursuing cosmetology, just like older sister Josie (Bates) Balka. Did you feel like your 18th birthday was a big milestone?

Chad's Flip House
A few days ago, we shared an update on the Paine family and mentioned that Chad's career in construction currently has him remodeling a flip house. Here is a photo that shows just how much flipping this home will require. He has stripped it down to the dirt! Some of the Bates boys, including Jackson and Trace, have been giving him a hand.
