Bringing Up Bates"A Latte Love"

  • “When we drove away together and we were by [ourselves], I literally felt like, ‘What just happened?’” says Josie. After their wedding, Josie and Kelton spend a couple nights in a rental home in Asheville, North Carolina. “It is so incredible to wake up next to my best friend…” says Kelton.
  • On the first day, they take an espresso class at Summit Coffee Co. Although Josie is a coffee fanatic, she discovers that she is not a huge fan of espresso. She prefers espresso plus milk, which is a latte. She and Kelton practice latte art, the term for the designs you can make when you pour the milk into the espresso. The newlyweds also tour a chocolate factory.
  • They next day, they hike up to chimney rock, which offers a breathtaking view. “Asheville is such a romantic location, and it was the perfect place to kind of break in being alone, being together,” says Kelton.
  • Meanwhile, since the Keilens, Smiths, and Websters are in town, everyone gathers to throw a shower for Tori and Bobby. They decorate the tables with items that Tori can use, like shampoo bottles and diaper cakes. Bobby kicks off the shower with a prayer, and then the guests are able to eat.
  • “The boys do not like to go to showers and stuff,” says Judson. “We’d rather be doing something like basketball, football, jumping off Mt. Everest with wingsuits.”
  • The shower is attended by lots of family members and friends. As one of the games, they compete to draw the cutest baby, which turns out to be very entertaining. Carlin is the winner.
  • Tori and Bobby also attempt to guess what goes in a diaper bag. “There’s two kinds of diaper bags,” says Zach. “What would you put in a diaper bag if you were packing it to be a new mom, or what would you put in a diaper bag for your second kid.”
  • It turns out to be an Erin bag. All the other moms laugh when she claims that you need lotion so you can rub it on your baby after they spit up so they don’t smell bad.
  • “Honestly, it was so amazing, literally the most adorable baby shower ever,” says Tori. “Everybody was there. They worked their tails off to get it set up.”

Josie and Kelton Balka, honeymoon espresso class

Kelly Bates: "When I hear the kids talking and they go to order these coffees, me and Gil are clueless. I don't even know them all. There's latte and frappe, Frappuccino, and extra pumps of this, and a little bit of that."

Gil Bates: "What's a macchiato?"

Kelly: "No idea-er."

Are you familiar with all the different coffee drinks that are available at coffee shops these days? Gil and Kelly admit that they aren't. In this video, which is an extended scene from last night's episode (be sure to check out our recap), Josie and Kelton Balka kick off their honeymoon with an espresso class at Summit Coffee Co in Asheville, North Carolina. They also learn something interesting about the term "cappuccino." Anyone heard of the Capuchin monks?

Carlin Bates and Evan Stewart are just 12 weeks away from their May 25th wedding! Evan proposed in September, which means that this couple's engagement has been significantly longer than the usual three to four months that past Bates siblings have had between their engagement and wedding.

Carlin has her wedding dress, and the Bates have finally made progress on finding a wedding venue near Knoxville. They are hoping to host the event at Castleton Farms.

Last September, Carlin Bates and Evan Stewart got engaged at Portland Head Lighthouse in Portland, Maine. We shared their engagement photos, but we thought it would be fun to give you a chance to see a few more snapshots of the popular tourist attraction, so you can more clearly picture the location that Evan chose for the proposal.

Just a couple weeks after the engagement, I (blog author Ellie) took a trip to the lighthouse. You can read more about my trip and see photos on my lifestyle blog, Nashville Wife.

Producer: "Chad, have you been informed on what part you're playing in Carlin's wedding?"

Erin Paine (laughing): "I was saving that for right now."

Do you remember Zach Bates using the term "volun-told" on a past episode of Bringing Up Bates? Well, being "volun-told" for a task seems to be common in the Bates family. In this clip, Erin "volun-tells" Chad that he is going to build a stage for Carlin's wedding. And Chad looks thrilled, doesn't he?

'A Wedding to Plan & Fun with the Fam' Recap

We apologize for the technical difficulties. Here is last night's recap...

Bringing Up Bates"A Wedding to Plan & Fun with the Fam"
  • While everyone is in town for the wedding, the adults take the grandchildren to a local children's museum called The Muse Knoxville.
  • "Any time there's a big event in the family, it's really fun for all of us to get together and not just catch up with each other, but watch all the kids and the grandkids get together and play," says Whitney.
  • While the kids play, Kelly catches up with the Keilens, who are enjoying playing with their nieces and nephews. Brandon's children's book has been sent off to an editor. Michael spends her days making blankets, which she sells, and traveling with Brandon for work.
  • "I don't think there's hardly a week that goes by that somebody doesn't say something, 'Oh, I wish Michael was here,'" says Kelly, who would love the Keilens to move back to Tennessee. "I know that her and Brandon are not going to make Chicago their home forever."
  • "The likelihood that all the kids would live in the same area is very slim, but it still doesn't hurt to hint and to throw out a few jokes every once in a while," says Kelly. "Thankfully, the kids all beg, 'Can we go to Erin's house, can we go to Alyssa's house, can we go to Zach's house,' and that means a lot to me, keeping those bonds strong."
  • Later, Gil brings Addee, Ellie, and Callie over to Erin's house to do a craft project. While Erin and the kids make cards, Papa holds Everly. "There's not many times when I get to have Everly all by myself," says Gil. "...Granny [is] always trying to rob...hold..the babies all the time..." says Gil.
  • Gil, Lawson, Nathan, and Trace visit the church building. The sheetrock is up, and it's time to work on the cosmetics. (Update: As of early March 2019, the church is pretty much finished!)
  • Trace is working part-time with Chad and part-time as a deputy sheriff. Nathan is spending a lot of time in the Philippines, working with others on putting in a 9-1-1 and radio communication system. The country also needs a helicopter system to transport patients between the islands, so Nathan plans to go to helicopter school. Nathan's goal with his mission work is to take care of folks' physical and spiritual needs.
  • "The older boys are doing a lot of things," says Jackson. "Getting girlfriends is not one of them."
  • "Nathan and myself, we're world travelers," says Lawson. "We have so many irons in the fire. We're all over the map. And Trace is that slow and steady and Mr. Consistent. He's available."
  • Erin, Carlin, and Kelly come over to Whitney's house to discuss wedding plans. Kelly brings food, and Zach shows up in his police attire to eat. "Anytime there's food around, this man right here finds some way to get there, no matter where it's at and what's going on," says Whitney. "Even if he hates wedding planning, he still shows up.
  • "I have a sixth sense for food," admits Zach.
  • Erin volunteers Chad to build a stage out of scrap lumber for Carlin's wedding, plus a bunch of decorations. "Like a chandelier, suspended in mid-air, on the stage?" clarifies Chad, as Erin explains the project. "This is going to be outside?"
  • "You read me," says Erin, smiling. "We are meant to be."
  • Carlin is planning to do a daddy-daughter dance with Gil and a first dance with Evan. Kelly explains the Bates' views on dancing: "Our family, typically in the past, really was not involved in dancing because we just wanted to avoid for our unmarried children, them dancing in a sensual way. But Carlin has said for quite a while, one thing she is looking forward to at her wedding is a daddy-daughter dance, and ballroom dancing is just a real classy style of innocent, wholesome dancing. We are all for her doing that at her wedding, we just don't know how." Gil and Carlin are currently taking a dance class.
  • Carlin is thrilled to be marrying Evan, but she admits that she is going to miss her family when she moves away.

Kelly Bates bringing Up bates

For those who missed last night's episode, Kelly Bates explained the Bates family's views on dancing. In a recent post, we mentioned that Carlin is going to do a daddy-daughter dance with Gil and a first dance with Evan at her wedding. That is a dream she has had for a while.

Some of our readers, who thought the Bates were against dancing, were confused at hearing this. Below is a quote from Kelly that will interest you. If you scroll down and watch the video, you can also see what Kelly has to say about doing a "wild dance."

"Our family, typically in the past, really was not involved in dancing because we just wanted to avoid, for our unmarried children, them dancing in a sensual way. But Carlin has said for quite a while, one thing she is looking forward to at her wedding is a daddy-daughter dance, and ballroom dancing is just a real classy style of innocent, wholesome dancing. We are all for her doing that at her wedding, we just don't know how."

-Kelly Bates

Gil and Carlin are currently taking dance lessons to prepare for the special occasion, which makes Kelly happy because she says that she will "be the great benefactor if [Carlin makes Gil] learn." The mom of 19 looks forward to dancing while doing the dishes with her hubby.

It may be warming up in other parts of the continent, but it's still winter in Chicago, Illinois. The Keilens recently enjoyed an ice skating date at one of the many outdoor skating rinks in Chicagoland that are free to the public. If you have followed our blog for a while, you have probably seen other photos of this couple ice skating. It's a sport they love doing together.

Decorating Kade Smith's nursery

Erin Paine: "Lawson, you carry the other dresser in here..."
Lawson Bates: "We just took it out..."
Erin: "Ya, but that's why we're so happy you're here!"

On Thursday's episode of Bringing Up Bates, Tori's due date is about a month away. But as many of you know, Kade arrived more than two weeks early, so she doesn't have much time before the birth. Tori and Bobby live in a two-bedroom apartment, and they want to set up the second room as a nursery before Kade arrives. Decorator Erin comes to Nashville to get 'er done, and she gets help from several other members of the family (video below).

"It's really nice having sisters that have had multiple babies, as well as my mom who had a trillion. Me going through it the first time, I'm terrified out of my mind, but being able to call them up...is kind of awesome."

-Tori (Bates) Smith

In real time, Kade Smith is four months old, but in TV time, he is about to make his grand debut. Tori, who admits she is nervous, has a conversation with mama Kelly, sister Erin Paine, and sister-in-law Whitney Bates (video below). Between the three of them, they have delivered 24 babies, so they have a lot of expertise for Tori to draw on.

'Nashville Nursery Makeover' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "Nashville Nursery Makeover"

  • “Ever since we moved, I’ve been talking with Erin, telling her she has to come decorate before she gets here because I have no skills whatsoever,” says Tori. In Nashville, Kelly, Erin, Everly, Whitney, Callie, and Bradley arrive at Tori’s apartment to help decorate Kade’s nursery. Lawson is already there.
  • “I didn’t get invited on this trip,” says Gil. “Of course, I’m always the guy that says, ‘Oh, don’t do that….it’s fine like it is.’”
  • But in all seriousness, Gil is very happy. “It sure is wonderful when, as a parent, you look at your kids all working together to help each other…”
  • Tori only has two bedrooms in her apartment, so the nursery must double as a guest bedroom. “I usually volunteer Chad for a lot of work,” says Erin. “[Tori] didn’t have a headboard, so I’m like, ‘Hey, you know what, Chad’s great at those. He can make that, no problem.’”
  • When it’s time to move furniture, Lawson does not allow pregnant Tori to lift anything, even light drawers. The walls in the apartment cannot be painted, so Erin makes square decals out of contact paper to create an accent wall. Everyone else is doubtful that it will end up looking good. “I’ve got confidence in her, but this is one that I honestly cannot picture,” says Kelly.
  • At Hendersonville Samaritan Thrift Store, the ladies shop for decorations. But it isn’t long before they are adding clothing items to the cart. “My sisters, when they go shopping for one thing, it does not mean that’s all they will be shopping for, and that can be a dangerous thing,” says Lawson.
  • Zach arrives with Kaci and tries to move things along. “Dad would die if he was here,” he says.
  • “I cannot go into a thrift store and just buy a couple of things,” admits Erin during an interview. “I have to see everything in the thrift store. Have you ever seen...them people that go in there and find something that’s like a million dollar artifact? That could be me finding that for us one day.”
  • “I’m not sure what a million dollar artifact would look like, but I know what a good pair of jeans looks like,” responds Chad.
  • When they return to the apartment, two women deliver a bouquet of flowers, a huge bunch of balloons, and snacks for Kelly’s birthday. They are from Gil, of course. “I almost think that I do better when I’m away on my birthday because I get this huge surprise package every time, then I still get to celebrate when I come home,” says the birthday girl. “It’s a good deal!”
  • The room turns out great, and Tori and Bobby could not be happier. “…We could put some decals on the wall and make it fitting for a baby, but once you’ve been exposed to what Erin can do to a room, there’s no going back,” says Bobby.
  • In Powell (near Knoxville), Katie is in class at Crown College. “Last minute this semester, I decided to sign up to do the cosmology program,” says Katie. “Today we are working on our very first day of hair color, so I’m kind of nervous…” Josie kills it, so there’s a level of intimidation.”
  • “The thing that scares us with Katie is, she’s a bit of a prankster and a jokester, and I’ve just got a feeling that the first time I let her cut my hair, she’s going to just like do something crazy…” says Lawson.
  • Katie still hopes to study nursing. “I’m the kind of person that wants to do everything I see…but finishing it is the thing,” says Josie. “I want to do nursing, but I’m going to finish up cosmetology first…”

Katie's Career Goals

What has 18-year-old Katie Bates been up to? Last year, she was enrolled in the one-year Bible program at Crown College. In May, we posted about her dream to be a nurse, but when the fall semester kicked off at Crown, she made the decision to follow in Josie's footsteps and study cosmetology.

"Last minute this semester, I decided to sign up to do the cosmology program," Katie explained on last night's episode. So what happened to nursing? She is still hoping to attend nursing school after finishing cosmology school, which takes most students two years to complete. Stay tuned to see what what Katie ends up pursuing as a long-term career!

A Bates family project is sure to involve plenty of laughs and crossed signals, and decorating Kade's nursery was no different. First, Erin must recall the lesson that Chad gave her on how to use the laser level. It also happens to be Chad's newest "toy," which means she absolutely cannot break it. And later, Erin and Tori realize that there was a misunderstanding on what it would take to paint one of the walls of the room (video below).

"If Mom is doing stuff with Judson and Jeb and Dad is out there doing it, guarantee you Mom tried to climb that rock wall. They get this mentality thing that they're 25 again."
-Lawson Bates

This week on Bringing UP Bates, you'll see Gil and Kelly take Judson and Jeb to an indoor rock climbing gym. Even though the Bates parents are also grandparents, they aren't interested in sitting on the sidelines. Watch them give it a try in the entertaining video below.
